What is Spondylosis? :
Spondylosis is the most common ailment that affects any part of the spine. It affects about 4 to 5% of the people. ‘Spondylo’- the vertebrae; ‘lysis’- the disintegration of a cell. This is a kind of degenerative disc disease. Spondylosis usually occurs in the lower lumbar spine and particularly, the L5 vertebrae. (L5 – the fifth lumbar vertebrae). This won’t present by birth but improves over time. Ayurveda deals with every disease with the three ‘Doshas’. They are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata is made of Air and Space, Pitta is of Fire and Water, and the Kapha is composed of
Water and the Earth. From these, Spondylosis disease is because of Vata dosha. Though spondylosis doesn’t cause serious issues, its effects will differ from person to person.
Types of Spondylosis:
- Cervical Spondylosis: It’s the most common type. It affects the neck part.
- Thoracic Spondylosis: It affects the middle of the spine.
- Lumbar Spondylosis: It affects the lower back.
- Multilevel Spondylosis: It affects more than one part of the spine.
What are the Symptoms of Spondylosis? :
- Rigidity, pain, and stiffness
- Weakness in the legs and hands
- Loss of bladder and bowel control
- Struggle in walking
- Muscle spasm and loss of balance
How does Spondylosis occur? :
Spondylosis is caused usually to the people who are tennis players, gymnastics, weight lifters and have repetitive trauma, etc. The main cause of Spondylosis is aging. The other causes are:
- Obesity
Obesity is a recognized factor. Overweight makes a force through the C-spine. And so it leads to Spondylosis.
- Genetic tendency
It’s a genetic disease. There are chances of getting spondylosis if any of your family members have affected by this already.
- Age factor
Age may be a risk factor of cervical spondylosis that affects the disks vertebrae of the cervical spine. The people who have crossed 40 ages can be affected by this. It develops its severity with the aging.
- Compression fracture of the vertebra
A compression fracture of the vertebra can happen due to the crumple or weakness of the bones in the spine. Lifting heavy weights is the main reason for this.
- Sedentary lifestyle
